Post Truth?

Thursday, January 26, 2017

Best line of the day: “I saw it on CNN. It must be true.”

Wanna know how energy efficient your home is? Go to https://myheat.ca  (Note, Mel is not sure how accurate this test is. And as you will see, the web site is aimed at getting you to order an energy home inspection from Mike Holmes. And to switch to ATCO energy.)

Members:

Brett Bain. He’s off to Phoenix (where he is outfitting his local, yard service team of hard working fellows with MacNab tartans. Seems Mexicans in kilts look like Scots, they say.)

Sean Baylis.

Jim Bladon. Jim is taking the pulse of Alberta agriculture and also, our foreign trade realities. He toured some farm communities in southern Alberta. He much appreciated how hoar frost decorates this amazing province of ours. Sadly, it doesn’t quite whitewash the concerns about the impact of TPP in the Trump era … but it is prettier than Donald’s hairdo. • Jim also spent some time listening to John Weeks  – who suggests we ignore the hysteria of the media and remember: trade is a very complex issue and changes take a long time. (For those wanting a John Weeks’ fix: https://www.bennettjones.com/WeekesJohn/

Paul Boucher.  He is taking advantage of business/social events and finding it rewarding. Not so much in direct business, but in reminding one of the breadth of the world around us. (It’s sometimes called the Tunnel-Vision-Eraser.)

Greg Callander.

Ian Campbell. He handed out a calendar featuring Kim Taylor’s rural Alberta photos. Nice work.

Matt Dart. Matt has been chasing down information on the promised ‘energy rebates’. He believes nonprofits should save a tidy bundle. The homeowner rebates are harder to assess. More to come when Matt gets a chance to evaluate it all.

Don Davis .

Todd Dean.

George Doherty.

Don Doolan.

Ken Eades.

Tony Fisher. Tony wonders how Trump expects to increase jobs in US factories … unless Trump is talking about robots getting more jobs. That must be it, eh? • Expect a tasty breakfast if heading out to Aldersyde, near Okatoks. Not sure which restaurant to try … but Tony knows.

Gord Forsyth .

Mel Gibson. Mel warns of yet another CRA scam. This one calls you to admit there’s been a CRA error: money has been withdrawn from your bank account. However, if you’ll pay the administration fee, they (the CRA) will return your money. Sounds flakey but it seems to be working.

Henry Heuver.

David Hicks.

Bill Hoogstratten.

Dan Kennelly.  The AltaGas Propane project in Prince Rupert, which uses some of the coal port infrastructure, will be good for Alberta and Canada. • Speaking of coal, Dan questions how the NDP can say that Alberta is saving the environment by shutting down 5 coal plants … while China currently operates a couple of thousand such plants and has plans to build another 1100 or so. (They burn as much coal as does the rest of the world. That’s a lot.)

Keith Kozak.

Matt Litke. Enjoyed being serenaded at the office on RB’s Day … by none other than Dave Hicks on the bagpipes. (Bagpipe aficianados might like to know that the bagpipes have been amazing Grace for over 5,000 years. And don’t believe that story about Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burned. Nero was playing the pipes … because the violin was not to be invented for yet another 1500 years.)

Andy Lockhart.   Expect Andy to soon be moaning about his stupid iPhone and Rogers’ cell phone service … now that he has escaped from the clutches of Telus and their %%$$#@Blackberry.

J.D. MacDonald. Lost a good, front end employee to a headhunter this week. How do I know she was good? She gave JD two weeks notice – even though the hirer wanted her to start the next day.

Michael McLennan.

Ross Mikkelsen.

Mike Mikkelson. Traffic at a recent Trade Show at BMO Centre was down 20%.

Gerry Parcells. Natural gas is going up, along with every other item on your utility bill.

Bruce Roblin.

Dwayne Vink. Kudos to Bell for their January 25th promotion in support of mental health. Bell has also been funding the Kid’s Help Phone for years. • One of Dwayne’s companies is starting a project in Saudi Arabia. (I hope your staff know about LBFM’s.) • Dwayne is heartened by the BC mine approval process for http://www.whyresources.com/

Bob Wiggins.  Bob enumerated how our utility bills are being jacked up by quite significant raises (henceforth to be known as Nenshi Taxes). •  Bob reminds us that the Alberta Government has two ‘investor’ tax credit programs: (Applications are due in February.)

Chris Wright.

George Roberts.  Words work when written well.
